Rupert Lang picAbout Rupert Lang....

Rupert was born a few years ago in Red Deer, Alberta. He took his first degree (B.Mus. Honours in performance) at the University of Manitoba, then went on to England where he studied at The Royal School of Church Music. In the course of those studies, Rupert received the Archbishop of Canterbury's Certificate in Church Music and a diploma from The Royal College of Music and Royal College of Organists. Rupert completed his studies in England at the University of Cambridge, St. John's College, receiving an MA (Music) studying with George Guest, Gillian Weir and John Scott.

After returning to Canada, Rupert became Director of Music at West Vancouver United Church, where he founded the Vancouver Children's Choir in 1983. In 1986, he left West Vancouver United Church to take on the responsibilities of the Organist and Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver. He remains active with both choirs today.

Rupert has maintained a high standard of choral excellence throughout. Under his direction, the Christ Church Cathedral Choir entered CBC's biennial National Amateur Choral Competition a total of four times (1998, 2000, 2002 and 2006), and took first prize every time out in the Church Choir category. In 2006, the Cathedral Choir also took the prize for Best Performance of a Canadian Choral Work. Competition rules did not permit the Choir to enter the Church Choir class of the competition in 2004 and 2008.

The Vancouver Children's Choir has also won its share of recognition.

In August of 2006 Rupert travelled to York in England with a representative group of Vancouver Children's Choir senior choristers. They participated in the Choral Music Experience 20th anniversary conference and performed a number of Rupert's compositions.

Rupert also teaches both voice and organ. For the latter, he uses the 3-manual Kenneth Jones tracker organ that was installed at Christ Church Cathedral in 2005.

As composer, Rupert has written innovative music such as Spirit of the Child and Cantate Domino and more extended works like Magnificat for soprano soloist and men's choir. His works are often premiered by Christ Church Cathedral Choir and The Vancouver Children's Choir, but other commissions have come from Central Bucks West High School in Pennsylvania, Vancouver Cantata Singers, Chor Leoni Men's Choir, The Calgary Girl's Choir, Vancouver Chamber Choir, Vancouver Men's Chorus, and The World of Children's Choirs 2001 Symposium. Some of his works have been performed by first-class choirs as far away as Europe and South Africa. His published works are listed here, along with some of his unpublished works.

More than a dozen of his compositions have been published by Boosey & Hawkes, New York. Rupert's published works include Agneau de Dieu, Can You Imagine?, Cantate Domino, How Like an Angel, Kontakion, Mass For Many Nations, Spirit of the Child and Ubi Caritas. Many of Rupert's compositions have been recorded by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir or the Vancouver Children's Choir and are available on CD-ROM. A listing of many of those sources is here.

Choral work is Rupert's life. Is it any wonder that he chose "cantate" for a domain name?
