The Garbage to Gold Recycling Society is involved ion recycling in Lillooet, British Columbia, Canada. Its purpose is to build a community recycling program. The society's method is to act as a global planner and builder while keeping the customer's best interests in mind. The society has been actively growing a small town recycling plan since 1992. This approach has been controlled by six directives.
1. Diversion - Commingle and compost programs should be accessible to everyone in order to attain high levels of diversion.
2. Quality control - Source separation and market awareness are key components in producing 'usable material'.
3. Sustainable - A broad customer base with clear financial responsibility is imperative to a sustainable system.
4. Education - A simple, upgradeable and accessible information system is required for full customer participation.
5. Local jobs - The society should consistently support local contractors and labour.
6. Global plan - The society has the unique ability to balance the profit oriented service providers with the environmental demands of the consumers. This involvement in a global plan is critical in an efficient recycling program.
